Entertaiment is any activity that diverts attention away from mundane responsibilities, or allows people to relax and have fun. It can take many forms, from something a person creates for themselves, such as an inventive game; to passive entertainment products, such as movies, music, or reading; to active and participatory events such as sports or theater. Entertainment can also have a serious purpose, such as ceremonies, religious festivals or satire. Entertainment has evolved into a massive industry, and many well-known entertainment brands have become household names. The word entertain comes from the Medieval Latin inter tenere, meaning “to hold inside,” and its Indo-European root is ten.
