The clown at your kid’s birthday party, a Broadway show, the stadium rock concert you attend or your friends fighting over the last potato chip–all of these are forms of entertainment. From the Old French entretenir, which meant support or maintenance and was associated with hospitality, the word grew to mean amusement. It has also come to mean distraction, as in a circus or theater show that is entertaining to the audience. Entertaiment often hits on themes that the human brain was evolved to react deeply to, wich is why alot of entertainment is focused on backstabbing and murder. See also art, drama.
